A Look Back at 2012

December 29, 2012

Ohhhhh 2012. What an incredible year!

Working on this blog post has been the perfect way for me to reflect back on this year. I can’t help but smile at all of the pretty faces I photographed, the people I met, the places I visited. My senses are completely overwhelmed with happiness as I relive it all!

But most of all, this post makes me incredibly giddy for 2013. Every year, I start out with a plan for myself and for my business, and God takes that and turns it into His own. Which is always way cooler and more exciting than my own! :)

I end the chapter of 2012, with an grateful and happy heart….and am ready to leap into the newest part of my story, that 2013 has for me!

In honor of an incredible year, here are some of the top reasons that 2012 was awesome:

I worked with Julie Story and some other very talented individuals, to release my dream brand. 2012 was definitely the year that I fully grasped the concept of my fairytale brand that I had been dreaming up for the last couple of years. I am soooooo thrilled with the outcome and the magic that it brings to my business!

I was incredibly honored by being named one of Le Magnifique’s 15 Wedding Photographers to watch out for in 2013.

And much to my disbelief and utter SHOCK, I won 2nd place in two categories in Showit’s photo contest. Winning this, in a pool of thousands of other incredible photos, was the perfect ending to my year!!

Not only did I get my first feature on Green Wedding Shoes….but that feature was hand-selected by their amazing editor for the Best of 2012 Engagements. EEEEEEK!!

Some other highlights of 2012:

– At the beginning of the year, I cut ties with my part-time job and all other side gigs, and pursued photography full-time.

-I attended my second WPPI conference, in Vegas.

-I wrote the “Why Wedding Photographers are SO Expensive” blog post, that went viral, with 70,000+ views overnight. It was quite a whirlwind experience!

-I got featured on some of my favorite wedding blogs, including Green Wedding Shoes, Le Magnifique, Wedding Chicks, and Love My Dress.

-I took a trip to the East Coast, where I did several shoots in NYC, Washington DC, Virginia, and Baltimore.

-I completed chapters Three and Four of The Fantasy Series.

-While on the East Coast, I taught my first one-on-one workshops.

-I had a booth at a local highschool’s career fair, talking to the students about how to get into photography. I was invited back a few weeks later, to speak to all of the photography classes at the school. I loved having the chance to inspire these teenagers! :)

-2012 was also an incredible year for shooting. Here are some of my favorite images from throughout the year.

And here are some personal and behind-the-scenes shots from throughout the year!

Last, but not least, 2012 was the year I got Instagram! And I love it! Here’s some highlights of my year, via Instagram!

  10. Bob Gantchev says:

Kristen, I’m following your blogs page after page and I love your talent, creativity, never ending ideas and consistent great images.
Your photographs look so stylish, elegant, pure, magical and dramatic….all that keeps my attention and genuine curiosity to explore more and more of your work and learn how to became better photographer. I see that you don’t carry a lot of equipment (some photographers are loaded like donkeys) especially when you do engagement photo-shoots… From what I see you love the fast 50mm/f1.4 and use of natural light….do you carry other equipment in your tiny bag or you prefer the freedom of shooting lite. I am a Nikon guy and I really do love my 50mm/f1.4 – it gives such a creamy blur especially from close distance and its very compact and lite so it does not brake my wrists when shooting long hours.
Would you please share with us what lenses do you like to use in portrait sessions and weddings. I`m not ashamed to ask, but when you shooting at bright sunlight and you still want to use large aperture to blur the back and slow speed for flash use what would you do to prevent overexpose in highlights.
